Organic Agriculture: Uganda’s Food Security Lifeline

We invite to sign this petition against the introduction the Biosafety and Biotechnology Bill 2012, which is currently under discussion in the Ugandan Parliament, and in favour of the implementation of supportive policies for Ugandan family farmers.


The proposed Bill will facilitate the introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) on a massive scale without any safeguards for family farmers. The GMO-model will gradually destroy family farming and local seed systems; and erode agricultural biodieversity. This harms the food self-sufficiency of family farmers, who represent the majority of the Ugandan population.

Government policies should focus on supporting organic family farmers, by enhancing their access to credit and to inputs as well as improving their market access through better infrastructure (roads, storage facilities etc.) and marketing facilities.
