25th Anniversary of AEFJN – May 28, 2013, Rome

In the series of events taking place to mark the 25th anniversary of the Africa Europe Faith and Justice Network (AEFJN), the celebration in Rome started with a festive Eucharist presided by Cardinal Peter Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and animated by an African choir. A cocktail gathered in the garden of the Divine Word Missionaries all those present and allowed to strengthen ties among the participants (Bishop M. Apochi from Otukpo Dioces (Nigeria), the Co-President of the JPIC Commission, general councils, contact of AEFJN member congregations, past and present members of the Executive Committee, the Executive Secretary from Brussels and other missionaries.

In her welcoming address AEFJN’s President, Sr. Roxanne Shares presented the motives of thanksgiving.

This is a moment for us to give thanks to God, who has done great things for us and through our every effort, great and small.

For 25 years, through AEFJN,

We have upheld the values of human dignity, the common good, and just, equitable sharing of Earth’s resources.

Our congregations and individual religious men and women have been committed to promoting equity, sustainable development, and economic justice in relations between Africa and Europe.

Through the dedicated presence of our members on both continents, AEFJN

Is in touch with the many realities and layers of society and knows well the African context and the European Union and member states’ policies towards Africa; and

Stands in solidarity with those who struggle in poverty and suffer from injustice.

Through AEFJN, we have used our concern, our truth, our voices to influence and shape more just policies and structures.

Why these collaborative efforts for justice for 25 years?

Because we have been called to be about God’s mission, to live in right relationships, to participate in the transformation of the world.

And when we dream and act together in mutuality for greater justice and peace, hope is born among us and we know “Our God to be a God of Justice,” a God of Love.

The closing of the celebrations will take place on 15th November in Rome when the Network will hold its General Assembly.

Roxanne Schares, SSND, President of AEFJN
