MORATORIUM ON LARGE SCALE LAND ACQUISITIONS

MORATORIUM ON LARGE SCALE LAND ACQUISITIONS

AEFJN calls upon all national governments (investor and host nations), international organisations, the UN General Assembly and investor companies to adopt a 5-year moratorium on large-scale land acquisitions worldwide until safeguards that prevent harm to local communities are in place.

A 5-year moratorium will suspend all activities related to large scale land acquisitions (LSLA) for agriculture with the aim to stop harmful impacts on humans, nature and economy.

During the moratorium measures should be taken to protect the population and the environment and to prevent irreparable damage for future generations resulting from LSLA. Therefore AEFJN calls policymakers worldwide:

  - to adopt binding legislation for agricultural investment that protects local                    communities and nature.

This legislation could be based on the FAO ‘Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security’.

A 5-year moratorium would provide time to host states to undertake a simplified land reform that would grant family farmers the right to own the land they work and live on.
